What Is A Colposcopy?
A colposcopy is a medical diagnostic procedure that involves the use of a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for signs of disease. The team at Mid Nassau OBGYN in Massapequa and Hewlett, NY utilizes colposcopy to provide a detailed view of these areas, enabling them to identify abnormalities and make accurate diagnoses. This advanced technique is particularly helpful in evaluating patients with abnormal Pap smear results, ensuring they receive timely and appropriate care. By incorporating colposcopy into their practice, Mid Nassau OBGYN ensures their patients receive thorough and effective evaluations for better gynecological health outcomes.
What Should I Expect During A Colposcopy?
During a colposcopy, you'll lie on an examination table with your feet placed in stirrups, similar to a regular pelvic exam. Your provider will gently insert a speculum into your vagina to keep it open, then use the colposcope, which remains outside your body, to get a magnified view of your cervix and vaginal walls. They may apply a mild solution, such as acetic acid or iodine, to your cervix to highlight any abnormal areas. The procedure is generally painless, though you might experience mild discomfort or a sensation of pressure. If your provider identifies any suspicious areas, they may perform a biopsy, taking a small tissue sample for further analysis. You can typically resume normal activities immediately following the procedure, though you might experience light spotting or discharge if a biopsy is taken.

Mid Nassau OBGYN Reviews
The sweetest and kindest doctor! So thorough with explaining things and taking time not to rush through appointments like other doctors do. The nurse and receptionist are so nice too!
lovely staff! lovely doctor
Dr Neuman and staff were awesome during my third pregnancy. They were on top of every test and made sure everything was going smoothly. I delivered my baby at exactly 38 weeks. They were quick with each appointment and my older children loved going with me ( they had toys for them to play with and always got a lollipop after). Happy to be coming back for my annuals and continuing care after pregnancy
I am writing this review to say , I had wonderful experience . Staff is very friendly and helpful and Dr Neuman was calm and easy to talk you. very nice office . Highly recommend
This office is a breath of fresh air. I’ve had so many bad experiences around the island and finding Dr. Neuman feels like a godsend. All the staff were friendly and helpful and Dr. Neuman was very respectful and informative. I was hesitant about seeing a male Gynecologist but he made it a very comfortable environment and is a naturally warm person. I was seen immediately upon arriving, no wait time, and the procedures did not hurt and went smoothly. Plus they accept Medicaid! I would leave 10 stars if I could. Highly recommend.

Am I A Candidate for A Colposcopy?
If you've received abnormal results from a Pap test or HPV screening, you may be a candidate for a colposcopy at Mid Nassau OBGYN in Massapequa, NY. This procedure is often recommended to further evaluate irregularities in cervical cells, such as atypical squamous cells or signs of dysplasia, which could indicate precancerous changes. Additionally, if you've tested positive for high-risk strains of HPV or have experienced unexplained vaginal bleeding, a colposcopy can provide a more detailed examination of your cervix, vagina, and vulva to identify any underlying issues. The experienced team at Mid Nassau OBGYN utilizes advanced colposcopy techniques to ensure accurate diagnoses and personalized care tailored to your health needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I prepare for a colposcopy appointment?
Preparing for a colposcopy can help make the experience smoother. Avoid scheduling the procedure during your menstrual period, as this can affect visibility. Refrain from using tampons, douching, or applying vaginal medications for at least 24 hours before the appointment. It's also a good idea to wear comfortable clothing and bring a pad because after the procedure some mild spotting is common.
Can I drive myself home after a colposcopy?
Yes, most people can drive themselves home after a colposcopy. The procedure doesn't involve sedation, so you'll be fully alert afterward. If a biopsy is taken, you might feel some mild cramping, but it's usually not severe enough to interfere with driving. However, if you're feeling particularly anxious or uncomfortable, you might prefer to have someone accompany you for support.
How soon will I get my colposcopy results?
The timing of your results depends on whether a biopsy was taken during the colposcopy. If no biopsy is needed, your provider might discuss their findings with you right away. If a biopsy is performed, the results typically take about one to two weeks. We will let you know about follow-up appointments and what the next steps might be based on the findings.
