What Is Birth Control?
Birth control, also known as contraception, is a method or device used to prevent pregnancy. At Mid Nassau OBGYN in Massapequa and Hewlett, NY, we specialize in offering a variety of birth control options tailored to the individual needs of our patients. Options include intrauterine devices (IUDs), such as Mirena® and Paragard®, as well as the implantable device NEXPLANON®. Each method provides effective, long-term pregnancy prevention, allowing our patients to choose the best fit for their lifestyle and health requirements. Our dedicated healthcare providers are committed to guiding each patient through selecting the most suitable birth control method, ensuring personalized and considerate care.
How Does Birth Control Work?
At Mid Nassau OBGYN, choosing the right birth control method begins with an initial consultation. During this important meeting, our healthcare providers will discuss your medical history, lifestyle, and reproductive goals to help determine the most suitable contraception option for you. Here's how each method works:
Mirena (hormonal IUD):
- Releases a hormone called levonorgestrel, which thickens cervical mucus to block sperm and thins the uterine lining to prevent egg implantation
- Offers up to five years of pregnancy prevention
Paragard (copper IUD):
- Contains no hormones; instead, it releases copper into the uterus, which acts as a natural spermicide
- Can remain effective for up to ten years
NEXPLANON (implant):
- A small rod is inserted under the skin of the upper arm
- Releases a steady dose of a progestin hormone, preventing ovulation
- Effective for up to three years
Each of these methods provides reliable, long-term contraception, allowing you to choose the best fit for your health needs and lifestyle. After your consultation, you will feel informed and ready to make a decision that aligns with your personal and family planning goals.

Mid Nassau OBGYN Reviews
The sweetest and kindest doctor! So thorough with explaining things and taking time not to rush through appointments like other doctors do. The nurse and receptionist are so nice too!
lovely staff! lovely doctor
Dr Neuman and staff were awesome during my third pregnancy. They were on top of every test and made sure everything was going smoothly. I delivered my baby at exactly 38 weeks. They were quick with each appointment and my older children loved going with me ( they had toys for them to play with and always got a lollipop after). Happy to be coming back for my annuals and continuing care after pregnancy
I am writing this review to say , I had wonderful experience . Staff is very friendly and helpful and Dr Neuman was calm and easy to talk you. very nice office . Highly recommend
This office is a breath of fresh air. I’ve had so many bad experiences around the island and finding Dr. Neuman feels like a godsend. All the staff were friendly and helpful and Dr. Neuman was very respectful and informative. I was hesitant about seeing a male Gynecologist but he made it a very comfortable environment and is a naturally warm person. I was seen immediately upon arriving, no wait time, and the procedures did not hurt and went smoothly. Plus they accept Medicaid! I would leave 10 stars if I could. Highly recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can birth control affect menstrual cycles, and if so, how?
Yes, birth control can significantly affect menstrual cycles. Many forms of hormonal birth control can make periods lighter, more regular, or even eliminate them altogether, depending on the type and usage. Some women may experience spotting or irregular bleeding, especially during the first few months of use, as the body adjusts to the hormones. These changes are generally safe, but it’s important to communicate with a healthcare provider if they become disruptive or concerning.
What should be done if a birth control pill is missed?
If a birth control pill is missed, the course of action depends on how many pills were missed and where you are in your cycle. Missing one pill typically means taking it as soon as you remember and continuing the rest of the pack as scheduled. However, missing multiple pills or a pill near the start of your cycle increases the risk of pregnancy, and additional contraceptive methods like condoms should be used for at least seven days. It’s also advisable to consult the specific instructions for your pill type and contact your healthcare provider for guidance.
Are there nonhormonal birth control options available?
Yes, several nonhormonal birth control options are available, such as copper IUDs, condoms, diaphragms, and natural family planning methods. The copper IUD is one of the most effective nonhormonal methods and works by creating an environment in the uterus that is hostile to sperm. Condoms also provide reliable contraception when used correctly and offer the added benefit of STI protection. Nonhormonal methods can be a good option for individuals who prefer to avoid hormones due to personal preferences or health concerns.
